Enjoy-

Rick and I are gearing up to start our 32nd year homeschooling. We began back in 1980 when we only had 4 children. We have since homeschooled all 14 of our kids, our youngest still being 12 years old. It’s a decision we’ve never regretted.

At the time, we had our two oldest sons in a Christian preschool run by our church. We loved what they were learning, but we lived 30 minutes from church. As the year went by, and I had to drive 30 minutes each way to and from preschool, I began to feel like my two youngest sons were getting a bum deal. They were spending 2 hr. a day in their car seats. One day I hung around church and observed what my sons were being taught. The thought grew that I could just do it myself at home and include my two younger sons as well.

I presented the idea to Rick and after some thought he said, “Well, sure, it’s only for kindergarten, right?” So next year, we taught the boys at home and were amazed at how quickly they learned. Our conviction began to grow that God wanted us to home educate our children! We’d never heard of anyone present day doing it, but God impressed upon our hearts that this is what He wanted us to do.

To make a long story short, we encountered trouble with the law, helped lobby for clearer laws, and were able to continue home schooling our kids. Years later we realized that God had placed that same conviction in the hearts of many other parents across the country to home educate as well and hence, the birth of the homeschooling movement!

Our main reason for homeschooling is the opportunity to raise our kids with a Biblical worldview, a passion for serving the Lord and a desire to make a positive difference in our culture! The best side benefit is that the kids are each other’s best friends. I would not trade the closeness our family members have for anything!

Over the years, we have mentored many families, helping them begin homeschooling or even just helping them with parenting. We have written many books to encourage parents and more recently have begun producing a line of character building materials to equip parents with the tools they need to teach godly character to their children, in ways that we taught our own with character studies and practical application that we know worked for our kids. We now offer character studies for preschool through high school and beyond! (check out our website http://www.thelearningparent.com/)

It was when I was listening to a presentation by David Barton about the signing of the Declaration, that he asked who knew more than 2 or 3 of the 56 signers. I knew three. As he proceeded to tell the stories of a few more, the Lord began to press upon me the need to find out about all these guys, teach my kids and other’s people’s kids too! These 56 men sacrificed all for us and we have totally forgotten who they are and what they did for US!!

For You They Signed

I got some research leads from David Barton and plunged into the fascinating study of 56 men who answered the call of duty and changed the course of history for an entire world! I felt like I was uncovering buried treasure and I was! Many of these men wrote in their last will and testament, a doctrinal statement of what they believed about Jesus Christ! When we have a president telling us we are not a Christian nation and never were, I found very much the opposite to be true. Upon completing my research, I turned it into a character study from the lives of the signers, as character just popped out all over the place. These men were dedicated to fulfilling their role as useful, productive servants of God. (90-95% of them were Christians and the others had a high respect for the teaching of Jesus Christ).

My purpose for writing the book was two-fold. First, to revive our forgotten godly history (one of the first signs of decay of a nation, is when their history is taken from them) , to share the inspiring stories of these 56 men and their dedication to Jesus Christ, and tell what they sacrificed for you and me. Secondly, to inspire young people and their parents today to pick up the mantle left to us by our founders and seek to lead the charge today to return our country to the godly roots it was founded upon, that God may again place his hand of blessing on our nation!
