Volcanic Eruption Creates New Island- Free Science Resource for Kids!

Recently a massive underwater eruption created a new island in the Red Sea. According to “The island essentially lava that cooled after breaking through the water’s surface began forming this month between Yemen and Eritrea among the Zubair archipelago, a group of small islands that come from a submarine shield volcano, according to NASA and the Smithsonian Institution’s Global Volcanism Program.”

This event isn’t uncommon, as surprising as that may seem, new islands develop from eruptions once every couple of years. In fact, The Earth: Its Structures & Its Changes by Carolyn Reeves and Tom DeRosa, discusses this very action and uses the example of the island of Surtsey and how it was created. In 1963 fisherman off the cost of Iceland noticed the columns of smoke rising from an eruption underwater. Soon there was a small island that four years later was home to several kinds of birds, insects, and plants! Many would assume the island was millions of years old based on the rounded rock formations, but the hardened/rounded rocks were all a result of the eruption.

Take a further look and learn more about these underwater eruptions and the effects they have on the creation of islands in The Earth: Its Structures & Its Changes

Grief is Difficult and Often Silent

The Mother’s Day holiday is a treasured occasion for many families. However, for women who have lost children, this can be a very dark, emotional time. Many times their mourning is silent, with families and friends often unaware of their need to process the loss out loud. And how will the living children feel if such raging sorrow for the one who is lost is expressed?

Many healthcare professionals agree that one in four pregnancies end in miscarriage. That statistic is overwhelming, and confirms there are thousands, if not millions of women in this world who have experienced this type of heartbreaking and life-changing loss.

Author Clara Hinton knows loss. She’s experienced six miscarriages, one still birth, the tragic loss of a sibling, death of an alcoholic mother, and abandonment by her father. She not only survived, she’s an inspiring author and speaker for others dealing with grief and death.

In her book, Silent Grief: Miscarriage-Child Loss, Finding Your Way Through the Darkness, Hinton helps the reader navigate the grieving process with:

  • The inspiring gift of hope
  • Personal experiences from the author and other couples
  • Practical and personal advice for coping with pain, anger, and silence

While miscarriage is extremely common, there are other types of child loss that are touched upon in the book including: stillbirth, missing children, and adult children who succumb to accident or illness.

“When I first read Silent Grief, five years after my teenage son died, I felt relief and reassurance that I was not a freak. Grief can have physical symptoms. I was not a hypochondriac. My feelings were real, they were valid, and they were survivable. I will be eternally grateful Mrs. Hinton took time to write this book; she gave me my life and my family back.”– Dru Fentem, grieving parent, Certified Rehabilitation Counselor

Silent Grief is recommended for anyone dealing with the complicated grief of child loss, including: doctors, nurses, clergy, grief counselors, and funeral directors.

For 24/7 online support visit:

Clara will be a featured speaker at The Compassionate Friends National Conference in July. She will be sharing on the topic of sibling loss.
